Starting the Young Horse
I also work with owners of young horses (from foals through to those being backed) in order to help prevent the development of problems. This involves regular lessons on groundwork and handling skills and equips the owner with the tools to help their horse throughout their life. Rather than taking a traditional 6-8 week period for 'breaking', I work at the pace of the horse and the handler. This varies from one individual to the next, but my criteria are relaxation and understanding from the horse, and patience and understanding from the owner.
Choosing to start your own youngster is not a decision to be made lightly- however it is an opportunity for learning for you both and leads to a deepening of your relationship with your horse.
Before I agree to work with anyone who wishes to back their youngster, I will do an assessment of both handler and horse. This may require a demonstration of handling and riding abilities. However, don't let this put you off, as the skills needed are not necessarily those gained with years and years of experience, but are often those gained through an attitude of open mindedness and a willingness to learn.
to the intense hands on nature of this work (requiring regular training
sessions) this is restricted to clients within a 25 mile radius of my
home. As with lessons, if you are able to travel to my local indoor arena
(Mossvale) I charge a reduced fee (not inclusive of arena booking fee).
